Opinions sought on downtown congestion driving tolls
POSTED August 20, 8:41 AM
The San Francisco County Transportation Authority conducted public meetings regarding a study about congestion charges for drivers who enter certain areas downtown at the peak driving hours. If you were unable to attend one of the public meetings in-person due to your job or other commitments, you are still encouraged to offer your input about the ideas under consideration.

  1. First, view the presentation information that will give you a better idea of the reasoning and the ideas behind the congestion charge study.  For Rincon Hill residents, we will want to pay special attention to the treatment of congestion tolls for those who live within the downtown zone. The presentation currently mentions a 50% discount, but perhaps an annual pass or permit would be more appropriate for those who drive down the peninsula to their jobs each work day.
  2. Next, take the online workshop and provide input for the study. If you think this plan is nuts, this is your chance to say so and to explain why this is your belief.  If you'd be happy if all of downtown San Francisco was car free, this is your spot to mention that too. A middle of the road option might be to reduce the number of parking meters on the streets and to hike the prices up based on demand in order to discourage drivers from trolling around blocks waiting for a parking space to open up - the caveat being the great number of parking spaces occupied by cars with handicap placards (no good solution for those really).
  3. Keep an eye on the www.sfmobility.org web site for new meeting dates and information.

A prior presentation from last year is also available online - more of a primer on congestion charges.  As always, please try to get involved in your community and to participate in meetings in the early stages when you still have the opportunity to shape any laws that result from the study projects like this one.
